点评:This is one of those instances where I would give this institution zero stars if I could. I will never return to this cash-hungry tourist trap ever again. And I'm an historian. Who lives in Fort Lauderdale! This is an institution that makes zero effort to reach out to the community they purport to document or make it affordable for them to attend. Their museum neighbors NSU and MODS both have multiple free days per month. History Fort Lauderdale? Zilch. Which is why I decided to go when they began advertising this free family fun day. Long story short: It was not a fun day. It was not even a fun five minutes. When I approached the ticket desk, the woman working there said nothing of the free day promotion. When I told her that's why I was there, she made a sour face and immediately tried to sell me a self-guided tour. Have you ever been charged for a tour, much less a self-guided one, at a museum? Yeah, me neither. When I made it clear I was only there for the "fun" day, she informed me that would limit me to the first floor only. Gee, not the upper floors, where the actual museum is located? What a rip-off! But I'd already paid for parking and thought I'd make the most of it, so I found a seat in a room on the first floor that was clearly meant to be streaming an introductory video. As there was no one working there, I pressed play on the remote control, something that should have been taken care of well before I arrived. No more than two-minutes in, sour face comes in, turns off the video and tells me "I shouldn't be touching peoples' stuff." Then she has the nerve to try and charge me ten dollar to watch. Based on the two minutes I'd seen, this was not exactly Ken Burns, so I said "You ain't gettin' eighty-eight cents from me, Rose" and got up and left. You do not "own" the history of Fort Lauderdale. In fact, you're only doing slightly better than the Spears family as its custodian. I could say much more, but going to redirect my energies writing the Florida Humanities Council, the BOA Charitable Foundation and the Bane Foundation about how their donations are being squandered. Luckily, I know my history, so I'm not doomed to repeat this horrible institution.
