Small, Free Art Gallery Next to the Manly Ferries

点评：Manly Art Gallery is only a very small space but entry is free and it’s located right on the waterfront, next to the Manly Pavilion. It’s just a short stroll from the ferry terminal. Its so easy to visit that I’m surprised Ive never been there before.
Temporary exhibitions are held on the ground floor which consists of three smaller rooms and two larger ones. The loveliest rooms are light and airy and look out towards Manly Cove Beach where the ferries pull in.
Much depends on what the current exhibition is. Right now, the finalists in the 2026 Environmental Art & Design Prize are on display. This will run until 20 Sept. It’s not a large exhibition but there was an interesting and diverse range of works across different media. A series of beautiful but stark, white rings caught my eye. Delicate and beautiful, they represented the bleaching of our coral reefs. Another large bold disc, made of coal and gold leaf was also very striking and referenced the well-known Australian poem, A Sunburnt Country. Altogether there are about 170 works.
The gallery is described as both art gallery and museum but don’t expect much in the way of museum. The museum part seems to be the small, permanent collection of ceramics which is on show in the upstairs room. Most people wouldn’t really regard it as a museum at all.
Staff are very welcoming and friendly and will readily answer any questions.
