点评:We visited on a Thursday morning around 9:30 with two adults and a 14-year-old and had a great time. I definitely recommend going on a weekday and getting there first thing in the morning if you can. We bought three feed buckets per person for the drive-through. A good rule is DON'T start your second bucket until you reach mile marker 1, and don't start your third until mile marker 2—you'll want that feed later! There was also a feed hut about halfway through the drive, but it was closed the day we visited.
We brought a larger bucket from home, dumped our feed into it and scooped smaller amounts into the safari buckets as we went. This ended up being a GREAT idea because Bestie dropped her bucket—with thankfully only a little feed in it—almost immediately after we entered the safari. The animals absolutely recognize those buckets and know they mean FOOD. Be prepared for feed to end up inside your vehicle, too. There is a vacuum in the last parking area on the right as you're exiting, which was a nice touch. If I went again, I'd also bring a GoPro with a hood or roof mount. You could get some amazing footage without trying to hold your phone while feeding animals.
The walk-through zoo is definitely worth doing too. We bought the $12 feeding package that included a cup of lettuce for the giraffes, two bird feeding sticks and a cup of goat feed. The downside is that you have to carry everything through most of the zoo because the giraffes are toward the back. There is another vendor at the giraffe observation deck if you don't want to carry lettuce, but it was more expensive than buying the package inside. HAVE PATIENCE with the giraffes! They may not immediately come over, but wait them out. Ours eventually came up to us and getting to feed them was absolutely worth it.
The bird enclosure was probably the most overwhelming part of the day. The birds have ZERO concept of personal space. They'll land on your arms, shoulders, head—pretty much anywhere they feel like it. The sign warns that some may nip, and take that warning seriously! We had them trying to nibble fingers, ears and hair, and some of those nips can actually hurt. I wasn't a fan from the beginning. Bestie and the teenager thought it was fun at first, but about halfway through even they were ready to GET OUT. Also, don't miss the sleeping kangaroos. Let's just say some of the males were VERY relaxed and apparently have no concern for modesty.
There's a good amount of walking. We logged around 2 miles while we were there, and the paths are a combination of blacktop and bluestone with some uneven areas and inclines. It was about 82° during our visit and definitely felt warm, so bring a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes. A GoPro on a chest or hat mount would've also been awesome for the walk-through portion. The café offers food and drinks, and the bathrooms were large, clean and had some seriously appreciated A/C! We could see animals in all of the enclosures and didn't have the problem of everything hiding, although the sunlight reflecting off the glass made some of the reptile exhibits difficult to see.
Overall, we had a great experience and there's enough here to spend several hours between the safari and walk-through zoo. Buy plenty of feed, pace yourself through the drive, bring water, wear good shoes and don't rush the giraffes. And if you enter that bird enclosure...you've been warned. We'd absolutely visit again!
