点评:St Martin’s Basilica is one of the main sights in the historic centre of Tours. Its not as big or as dazzling as St Gatien’s Cathedral but it’s still impressive in its own right.
Dating back to the 5th century, it was built over the tomb of St Martin of Tours who was buried here in 397AD and whose remains are still preserved in the crypt.
However what you see here today was largely rebuilt between 1886 and 1902.
It’s easy to combine the basilica with other points of interest and if you’re on foot like us, there are several other sights within very close walking distance. The Charlemagne Tower is opposite, Les Halles (the covered food and produce market) is just 3 minutes walk away, and Place Plumereau is only another minute or two further on.
Like most churches in France, entry is free.
