点评:My wife I and recently stayed at the lodge in Shawnee state park. We have made it a mini mission to stay at all the Ohio state park lodges. We recently stayed here for a long weekend in October. Review of the lodge:
We arrived Thursday just after 4 the check in time. We still had to wait 20 minutes for our room. The room was clean so no complants. Interestingly there were portable dehumidifiers everywhere plus in our room. In the middle of the night the one in our room started loudly beeping because the water needed to be emptied. Not ideal. We had a small balcony overlooking the woods. Overall the typical amenities. Dormer fridge, single cup coffee maker, TV.
The restaurants in all the lodges are run by the same company. The state of Ohio should rethink this or take new bids when the contract is up. The food quality has varied at the different lodges but this one is not good. Our first night we went for dinner. Very small crowd so not busy. I ordered the grilled porkchops and my wife ordered the rosemary chicken. It came with 2 sides and soup or salad. The soup came after we got our entrees. I prefer my soup before the entree. Our meals were suppose to come with bread but we didn't get ours until we asked for it and again after the entrees.
Both our main entrees were dry and my porkchops were very bad quality. More fat then meat. One of the sides was the vegetable of the day which was baked beans. Just a note to the restaurant. Beans are not a vegetable. They were actually the best thing we ate.
We tried breakfast the next morning. I had a yogurt parfait. Now there was no description of it in the menu but I assumed it would be yogurt, fresh fruit and granola. What I got was yogurt with granola no fruit. My wife had the pancakes and said it was OK. So needless to say we didn't eat here the rest of the weekend. *Look for my reviews on a couple of nice restaurants we found close by.
The front desk people were friendly. A nice lobby sitting area with a fireplace and a patio with a view of the lake. There are the usual pools (indoor / outdoor (closed for our visit)) and arcade. Friday night they showed a movie outside by the fire pits. So overall not bad but not the best lodge in Ohio.
The park trails:
We did the 4 mile park trail. First, I have noticed the state of Ohio is not good with signage that points to the location of the trails from the road or points out the trail heads and where they start. The actual trail markers were well positioned and clearly marked. So that helped. This loop does have some steep grades both up and down. We started at the turkey creek lake beach area parking lot. We followed the blue/red trail markers until the red splintered off. Then we followed the blue / aquamarine markers back to the beginning. It took about 2.5 to 3 hrs at a leisurely pace. A very nice afternoon walk on a beautiful fall day.
The next day we did the lookout trail also called The Dr. E Lucy Braun lookout trail. A nice looping 1.5 mile trail located near the Roosevelt lake. The grades going up and down are not too strenuous. But in one section just past the lookout point there are a group of fallen trees you will have to get around / climb over to continue the loop. They have been there for awhile so I am not sure why they haven't been cleared from the path . Also, dont expect a Kodak moment at the lookout point. At one time there may have been an unobstructed view of the lake and trees on the other side. But now its been filled in with younger trees. There's not much of a view. But there is a nice bench to rest.
One other place we visited was the Copperhead Fire Tower. Now if the state of Ohio is going to point this out as a place to visit you would think there would be appropriate signage. But there is not. We were lucky to have enough cell service to follow our GPS. Its up a very narrow road past a horse camp and continues on a sketchy gravel road. Not a sign to be found even when we arrived at the site. Besides our car there were a couple of dirt bikes and horseback riders. They probably had the better drive/ride up.
The tower itself is a little rundown and covered with local graffiti. The state of Ohio's website says visitors can climb at their own risk. I am guessing they think this releaves them of any legal responsibility. The steps are narrow. Only meant for one person traffic. But once your at the top its a great view of the surrounding valley and hills.
So Ohio if you going to list a site worthy to visit mark it as such and improve the site and roadway. Others wise dont even mention it.
But, in my opinion besides those 2 things I would replace the old fire lookout tower with something along the lines what holden arboretum did called the emergent tower and put a sign saying former site of the copperhead fire lookout tower.
Overall its a nice park worth visiting but the.lodge needs some improvements
