点评:It’s is free entry!
Housed in Leipzig’s historic Old Town Hall, the Leipzig City Museum is spread over two main floors and is free to enter, making it an easy addition to any visit to the city centre.
The museum provides a good chronological introduction to Leipzig, beginning with the development of the city through the centuries and continuing to around the 18th century on the lower floor. The upper floor takes the story from the 19th century through to the present day, including Leipzig during the Weimar Republic and the subsequent period of communist rule.
There are several rooms covering the development of Leipzig and some of the key events in the city’s history, including the Reformation and the founding and development of Leipzig University, which recently celebrated 500 years of university status.
One particularly interesting section is the Richard Wagner room, which contains a small but worthwhile collection of artefacts, including a piano reportedly given by Ludwig Victor II and a death mask. There are also several rooms with paintings and other objects relating to the city, while a large historic city plan provides an impressive centrepiece in the main hall.
The museum also extends into the basement, reached via a rather narrow staircase, where a small collection of historic treasures is displayed, including swords and chalices.
The roof space via a not so visible door made poignant reminder of the Leipzig bombing during the end of WWII with a video of the city and some
Photographs.
Overall, this is an excellent introduction to Leipzig’s history and I would recommend visiting it early in your stay, as it gives useful context for understanding the city and its development. Given that admission is free and the museum is so centrally located beside the Old Town Hall and Markt, there is really little reason to miss it.
