A beautiful demonstration of how wealth and ingenuity can enhance nature.
Cragside House and Gardens的点评
点评:The National Trust cares for Cragside House and Gardens so members enter for free. Entry fee is reasonable for others given the extent of the experiences on offer. It is easy to spend the whole day here.
There is a large car park near the house and some motorised assistance vehicles are available. There are also several parking areas on the 6 miles drive around the estate.
Refreshments are available near the main car park in a stables building and also, seasonally, in the grounds near Nelly's Moss Lakes. Usual NT fare and prices.
The gardens are extensive with formal gardens, towering trees in the pinetum, huge rockery near the house and acres of semi-wild rhododendrons. The hillside was transformed by the Armstrongs through engineering, but now it all looks so natural. We walked for miles under the canopy of rhododendrons and had vistas across the Northumberland countryside intermittently.
The paths are mainly uneven and many are steep.
The house is fascinating, giving a view into the upstairs - downstairs life of Victorian Britain. There are so many early inventions to appreciate and all powered by hydro electricity. The volunteer guides were happy to explain things but were not intrusive.
The car park was full but at no point did Cragside feel crowded.
Sign posted from major roads some distance away.
