点评:Very disappointed.
We spent a few days in the area last week, staying at Beadnall Towers in Beadnall (a great place) and, although strong winds and driving rain on the afternoon of Friday 24th October , we decided to walk along the coast, from Craster, to visit Dunstanburgh Castle. We noted from the sign by the gate for the Coastal Walk from Craster, that the Castle closed for visitors at 4pm so, as it was just after 2.15, off we set. A few other people had the same idea , as we passed them heading back. It was an half hour walk from Craster. We reached the Keep, just before 2.50 pm, and thought that, given the weather, an hour to view the castle, would be fine.
We trudged through pretty dreadful weather to get here.
As we came through the Keep, a gentlemen approached, to seemingly meet us, only to spread his arms to block our way, advising that they had decided to close at 3pm, as no one had visited for 40 minutes and, advising that we could not have access, he shepherded us away; we had passed people returning, only 15 minutes previously. My wife had a bright red jacket on, being clearly visible from 1/2 a mile so, had they looked to determine whether there were any visitors in transit they would have known that people were in transit for an Hour’s walk, in pretty atrocious weather.
As two 69 year old people, we were "pleased" that we had succeeded in making the arduous one hour trip, which it should have been evident to the official. The dismissive "welcome" surprising, and disappointing. As we were not in the frame of mind to "debate" the issue with the official, I did not press the matter, as we just wanted to complete the return journey in the wind and rain, and put is behind us. Typically British, eh?
Perhaps the opening hours should be amended to read, “Opening time can vary. Take a chance”! Perhaps further guidance and training should be issued to staff?
In better weather, the experience would doubtless have been different.
