点评:VERY DISAPPOINTING – CERTAINLY NOT THE “HOMEMADE SUNDAY CARVERY AND DESSERTS” WE EXPECTED
We visited The Castle Green in Lampeter today for Sunday lunch. Before going, I had seen their advertisement for a “homemade Sunday carvery and desserts” and, with an impressive 4.9 rating on TripAdvisor from over 600 reviews, we were really looking forward to it.
Unfortunately, our experience couldn't have been further from our expectations.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
From outside, first impressions were actually good. It looks like a nice establishment, although parking was a little tricky when you're unfamiliar with the area. We did manage to find a space in the next street.
Once inside, however, things changed rather quickly.
As you enter the restaurant, there is a glass door next to the bar which, bizarrely, was filled to the brim with toilet rolls on the other side.
The restaurant itself felt extremely dated and cluttered. There seemed to be ornaments everywhere, with a mixture of Art Deco pieces and items that looked as though they had been handed down through generations or picked up at a car boot sale.
It's such a shame because there are some potentially beautiful features, including a lovely chandelier at the back of the restaurant.
The table decorations consisted of small plastic flowers in what looked like shot glasses, unlit tea lights and wine glasses containing bright orange paper napkins.
More concerningly, our table was so sticky that I could barely move my placemat.
My partner was also sitting on a chair with a fabric cover over it. The cover was absolutely filthy and visibly ingrained with dirt. Quite frankly, it was unpleasant to be sitting on and certainly not something you want to notice when you're about to eat.
THE CARVERY
There seemed to be an extraordinary number of staff congregating around the bain-marie.
One person was carving the meat while two young waitresses continuously stirred and served the vegetables. At one point I counted SIX members of staff gathered around this area.
I've never been to a carvery where customers aren't generally able to serve their own vegetables.
I appreciate that having a member of staff available to assist anyone who needs help could be a lovely touch, but having two people standing over the vegetables, constantly stirring and portioning them out, felt unnecessary and, if I'm honest, a little intimidating.
If the concern is customers handling hot utensils, perhaps proper serving spoons rather than what appeared to be dessert spoons would be a better solution.
I eventually made a point of serving my own vegetables because, personally, part of the appeal of a carvery is choosing what you want and how much of it you want.
I also noticed an older gentleman repeatedly coming from the kitchen to replenish the carvery. Unfortunately, his black trainers were visibly covered in food, which wasn't particularly pleasant to see.
THE FOOD
There was a very good choice of meat: lamb, beef, pork and turkey. Three of us chose beef and one chose pork.
Sadly, this was where the food really began to disappoint.
The beef had a stringy, brisket-like texture and was extremely salty and over-seasoned. The pork was similarly stringy and unfortunately very dry.
This was particularly disappointing because the meat actually looked and smelled delicious.
The Yorkshire puddings appeared to be frozen rather than homemade.
Next to the meat was a pale, runny mixture. I had to ask what it was and was told it was stuffing.
Honestly, it resembled porridge in both appearance and consistency. Unfortunately, it tasted no better than it looked.
The roast potatoes tasted like frozen roasties that had been deep-fried and then kept warm, leaving them extremely dry.
The parsnips appeared to have been cut into small pieces and deep-fried. They were bland and unseasoned.
The carrots at least appeared fresh.
The mushy peas tasted tinned and were extremely sloppy, which wasn't helped by them being continually stirred.
The mashed potato was bland and unremarkable.
There was also broccoli and cauliflower cheese. Again, this was continually stirred to the point that the broccoli had practically turned to mush. To me, it tasted like frozen vegetables in a cheese sauce rather than anything resembling a homemade cauliflower cheese.
There was also cabbage and a swede and parsnip mash, which I didn't try, so I can't fairly comment on those.
And then there was the gravy.
It was thin and watery, with some small pieces of beef in it, but it certainly didn't taste homemade to me. It tasted much more like gravy granules mixed with meat juices.
THE “HOMEMADE” DESSERTS
By this point I was incredibly disappointed, but given that homemade desserts were specifically advertised, I hoped pudding might redeem the meal.
A young waiter handed me his notepad containing the dessert choices and I ordered berry crumble with custard.
The custard tasted instant.
The crumble had very little crumble topping and appeared to have been microwaved for so long that it was stuck to the bowl and became increasingly solid as it cooled.
My partner ordered pavlova.
What arrived appeared to be a shop-bought meringue with berries in the middle, squirty cream and a scoop of ice cream.
Again, certainly not what I would personally describe as a homemade dessert.
£87 FOR FOUR PEOPLE
Our bill came to £87 for four people – four carvery dinners, three desserts and four soft drinks.
Had we eaten a genuinely homemade, tasty Sunday lunch followed by homemade desserts, I would have happily considered £87 money well spent.
Unfortunately, that simply wasn't our experience.
I'm not usually someone who writes negative reviews, and I certainly don't expect fine dining from a Sunday carvery. But when a restaurant specifically advertises “homemade Sunday carvery and desserts”, I think it's reasonable for customers to expect considerably more of the food to actually taste and appear homemade.
Perhaps we visited on an unusually bad day, because the overwhelmingly positive reviews – particularly a 4.9 rating from more than 600 reviews – genuinely leave me baffled.
For us, it was an extremely disappointing Sunday lunch and, sadly, not somewhere we would return to.
