点评:The University of Toronto is the largest university in Canada and is consistently ranked as Canada's top university when it comes to research excellence, teaching quality, and global reputation, ranked 32 worldwide by topuniversities.com. It operates over 3 campus sites - one in the east in Scarborough, one in the west in Mississauga and the main traditional campus, St. George, just north of the financial city center of Toronto. It is this campus that we visited on a Sunday morning walk and probably the best for you to see in regard to history, atmosphere and proximity to the other things you want to see in Toronto.
While the lead university today, it was not the first college in Canada by far, but it is the oldest in the Province of Upper Canada (Ontario). It was founded in 1827 as Kings College as a religious institution associated with the Church of England. Its first President was John Strachan, who was a rector at St James Cathedral, the first Bishop of Toronto and the protecter of York during its control and burning by US troops in the War of 1812.
The college began its operation on 170 acres of land acquired from 3 farms on the edge of town where the St. George campus continues to sit today. In 1849, the newly formed Province of Canada (unification of Upper and Lower Canada) voted to severe ties with the Church of England and rename the secular college the University of Toronto. About the same time that was happening, the City of Toronto negotiated to take about a third of the campus land for a new city park (Queen's Park) and the Legislative Parliament of Ontario. Today the two, park and university, are adjacent to each other and can be easily visited as we did on our walk.
The university is the birthplace of insulin, stem cell research and the first artificial cardiac pacemaker. Among its alumni, it has 11 Nobel laureates, 6 Turing Award winners, 100 Rhodes Scholars, 1 Fields Medalist, 5 Canadian Prime Ministers, 3 Governors General of Canada, 17 Justices of the Canadian Supreme Court and 8 Mayors of Toronto.
While there may be tours of the University where you can visit the interior of the buildings, the exterior is open and free to visit any time as we did on a Sunday morning walk. We began our tour in the SW corner of campus near Kensington Market and walked to the Front Campus oval in the center with most of the historic campus buildings. Like many other public buildings of that era, the architecture is Richardson Romanesque. The grounds were beautiful and very collegiate. We then continued through the Soldiers Tower to Trinity College before leaving for Queen's Park. It was a great walk and fun to see the premier University in Canada.
