点评:Obviously, the gardens were lovely, the staff friendly and the visit was lovely - it's national trust, and those guys know what they are doing.
What I wanted to write about though, the thing that was unexpected, was the food. NT tea room: soup and sandwich, victoria sponge, right?
Well, sort of. The sandwiches were expensive (£8.50) but the fillings unusual. Kimchi and cheddar? In an national trust tearoom? I decided to go with it, we were on holiday after all.
Best decision - best sandwich - ever.
Chunks of salt crystal laden cheddar, the perfect balance of leaves and a kimchi that wasn't the strongest but held it's own against the cheese, giving a crunch and a slight funk that was perfect with the moist and slightly oily bread. Although it was huge, every mouthful was a delight so it never became dreary (egg and cress - I'm looking at you now).
Honestly, it was an unexpected joy, a culinary highlight of my year. Go there. Try it. It's worth the trip on its own although you will also find that the views are quite nice. Go! Now!
