点评:I have been coming to OCNJ every summer for decades, going back to my childhood. It is one of my favorite places in the world. However, while sitting on the 8th street beach yesterday, I was struck by a word that I never thought I would associate with the Ocean City: downhill.
The former site of Gillian’s Wonderland, now sitting in limbo for its second summer, is starting to impact the vibe of the boardwalk. The line between cute nostalgia and a dying mall vibe isn’t all that fine, but it appears to be about the size of a vast plot of prime estate left to languish. I am shocked that the town has allowed it to sit for so long without reaching a resolution for how to move forward with the space.
Further, the beach itself on 8th street has become increasingly more narrow over the past few years due to erosion. High tide can easily cover most of the beach now, and the limited space seems to be creating more conflict amongst beach-goers. It also appears that trash cans may have been pulled from the beach in an effort to try to make more room? Yet, discarding trash can now be a hike.
IMO, it seems as though the individuals who have been entrusted with taking care of this jewel of a town have been underperforming. There seem to be major issues piling up that aren’t being addressed in a timely manner, and it’s heartbreaking to see.
