Medieval Hilltop Ringfort with Phenomenal Views

点评：This is a great site in two respects, but I'll confess that it may not appeal to everyone.
The Gianan of Aileach is a little bit west of Derry. You'll need to drive a few miles on single-track roads, but the scenery is beautiful. It's somewhat remote, but at the end of the drive you'll come across a parking lot and this unusual fort.
As suggested above, this site will be of interest in two respects. First, there is the fortress itself, which is believed to be a bit over a thousand years old (plus some reconstruction). Second, the drive along the way is pretty and the views from the top are great for miles in multiple directions.
I don't know whether or how much action this fort may have seen, but it is striking to think of some enemy or invader braving an attack up the steep hillside to this hilltop fort.
We were here on an incredibly rainy morning, but the views were still terrific and the fort interesting. There was an incredibly nice guy from Ukraine with a coffee trailer where we got some much-welcome coffee and pastry.
