点评:I came to Harnas because it sold itself as an ethical sanctuary focused on rehabilitating and releasing animals back into the wild. Unfortunately, that is not what is happening. When you go in, you’ll notice they have certain animals in enclosed spaces (e.g. baboon) and they cannot be released into the wild because they’re too used to humans. Then we have the cheetahs. They invite you into their enclosed space to walk with them because they’re friendly and used to humans. This means they ALSO can’t be released into the wild. Then you have the lions—also in enclosed spaces—who cannot be released either. I asked how these animals were rescued and I was told that they were BORN here. When I asked them why they were breeding these animals, the guide said: “because everyone likes a lion puppy”. In other words, these animals were bred with the intention to attract tourists and volunteers, and NEVER with the purpose of being released into the wild. While Harnas does care for its animals well, I find it problematic to keep these animals in enclosed spaces purely for money. This means Harnas is basically a zoo with bigger cages. I know that there are dangers in releasing some of these animals like poaching or being shot by farmers, but Harnas is not even TRYING to release them and that’s what I find problematic. There are some animals that are free to roam around the sanctuary grounds, and those are the happiest.
In terms of the restaurant, I can’t really comment. I think I should have known when the menu didn’t have almost any vegetarian options that this was not necessarily a sanctuary. I will say the staff were very nice and willing to accommodate our requests.
Lastly, the accommodations (we got the gorgeous cottages) were great until the sun went down. I have never seen so many bugs trying to get into a place. I even saw a flying cockroach the size of a baseball. We couldn’t even cook because bugs kept falling into the pan. Prior to staying here, I had been camping in Namibia and had never had this bug problem before.
