点评:Le ‘Grand Marionettiste’ is an automaton in the form of a ten-metre-high male figure built into the façade of the International Institute of Puppetry on the Place Winston Churchill. Only the gilded legs and the face of the puppeteer – a Greek theatre mask – are visible. When we visited, early in March, the legs were hidden behind construction fencing. The body of the puppeteer is taken up by a theatre with red curtains topped by a clock. Each day, every hour on the hour from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., the curtains open and a short scene from the Ardennes legend of the Four Sons of Aymon and the horse Bayard is shown. Only on Saturday at 9.15 p.m. can the whole story, divided into twelve scenes, be seen. So we joined the small group of spectators on a Saturday evening. The scenes were very short, there were few moving parts, and the wait between scenes was rather long. The little ones were fascinated but grew impatient while waiting for the next scene. Worst of all was the noise of the cars speeding round the square. All in all, an underwhelming experience.
