点评:Mahon is lovely at its heart with some beautiful buildings and features but it is only quite small considering it is the capital of Menorca. It clearly caters for wealthy tourists with its expensive shops which mostly close for Siesta between 1.30pm and 5.00pm when there's not much to do in town other than have something to eat or drink. There is an indoor market if you are self catering. There are four Italian ice cream parlours (amongst others) and we skipped dessert most nights in favour of a walk into town for and ice cream before 9.30pm. We didn't get chance to visit many of the shops because they were open when we were getting ready to go out for the evening and had closed by the time we had finished our meal. It's nice to stroll along the harbour looking at all the boats, yachts and catamarans which takes 15 to 20 minutes. There is a good atmosphere, particularly at night, and there are quite a few bars and restaurants, but you might be stuck if you don't like fish or tapas as we were. Along the harbour there is an Indian restaurant The Cardamom, a Chinese restaurant El Puerto Asiatico and an Italian restaurant La Florinata which we visited more than once each and would recommend, particularly La Florinata for their huge delicious Lasagna which could easily be shared between two with a side, and the lovely lady front of house was very welcoming and helpful. At home we like to finish our evening meal by 6.30pm but most of the restaurants only open at 7.30pm. There is a grubby looking glass lift up into town near the port terminal but it was only working on the first and last evening of our 11 night stay which meant climbing quite a number of steps. At the other end of the harbour, towards the Illa Del Rei there is another lift (behind the restaurant il porto) which takes you up to what was our hotel the Senator Port Mahon. The lift is in a quiet poorly lit area at night and is dingy with the stainless doors spattered in something brown. On the last night of our stay this lift was out of action forcing us to use the stairwell which was covered in graffiti and it came as a shock being immediately behind an upmarket restaurant. Quite a number of the buildings are empty and in disrepair along the harbour. There is nothing of interest to find in exploring the side streets of town and nothing behind what looks like a castle entrance only a few shops. There is no free live music in the bars at night apart from one. There are white plastic recycle bins outside the terraced houses, along with plastic bags of rubbish and bin storage trees at the end of roads. The side streets were extremely quiet at night and considering the wealth of the visitors it is quite run down and there seems to be quite a bit of poverty. We only saw one bus but believe there is a good bus service to the rest of the island. We didn't see the point of doing this if the shops were all going to be closed.
