点评：A swift evening walk along the sandy beach. The wind picked up and as always happens on this type of beach you are very quickly sand blasted. Only got halfway down this lovely stretch of sands, but then you can walk back along side the Old Course, so even if the weather changes the walk will not disappoint. The beach treats you to some scenic views out over the North Sea and back towards St. Andrews.
Anyone who has watched golf from the Old Course, would have see this stunning stretch of sandy beach. It's just a short walk from the town or the hotels near the clubhouse, to an award-winning, two-mile-long beach on their doorstep. St Andrews West Sands is a stunning expanse of uninterrupted beach stretching from St Andrews along the edge of the legendary Old Course to the Eden Estuary.
St Andrews West Sands Beach is also famous for the opening scenes of the film Chariots of Fire.
Between the beach and the Old Course are an extensive area of sand dunes, which are also important to provide a natural defence against the sea and are home to many important plants and animals.
The dunes form part of the Firth of Tay and Eden Estuary Special Area for Conservation, with a dune stabilisation programme is in place. This is evident from the demarcated areas of the dunes, where marram grass is being planted.
If you are lucky enough to visit the beach please make sure you use the many designated access points to reach the beach, thereby preserving this unique environment for future generations.
