Agate Fossil Beds National Monument的点评
点评：This is a small monument whose "claim to fame" is being a location where numerous fossils were found, dug up, and sent to various museums. Of course they have their own fossil exhibit, albeit small, inside the visitors center. There are two main trails, a one mile trail close to highway 29, with its own parking lot; and another 2.8 paved trail that starts out from the visitors center. Due to time I only hiked the latter. Since it is mostly paved, and is a gradual incline with a mostly level loop by the bluffs where fossils were found, it is quite easy, and there are shaded benches along the way. I imagine that even someone with a handicapped electric cart could do this if they had a fully charged battery. If you attempt to do that, be sure to ask at the visitors center first if it's feasible. (Or call.) There are a few dirt sections on the level part of the trial, but it's packed dirt.
The views are obviously not trying to compete with better known locations like Yellowstone or Yosemite, but that's not why you visit here. It's wonderfulness is in the serene peace and quiet, only a handful of other visitors, (which makes conversing with them pleasant,) and the unusual diversity for such a middle of nowhere location. Loved all the prickly pear cacti in bloom when I was there in late June.
Its location is slightly east of highway 29, north of Mitchell, NE or south of Harrison, NE. Although you could take the River Road from highway 71, I highly advise against it, unless you have an all terrain vehicle. Parts of it are pretty beat up. Even the section from highway 29 to the monument is bumpy, and it's paved.
I went out of my way to see this place, and I was not disappointed. Even kids seemed to enjoy it. I watched a little boy bend down to take a closer look at an unusual grasshopper. It's the little things sometimes that are memorable.
