点评:The Church of St Laurent is only a minor sight but because it’s right outside the Fort of St Jean, it’s very easy to have a quick look when you are visiting the fort.
It has a scenic location, high up on the La Tourette hill and overlooking the old port. Right beside the church, you will also find the charming bronze statue of a young man and his performing bears.
The church has a long, long history and has been known as the fishermen's parish since the 12th century. It’s built over the top of an ancient pagan temple that was dedicated to Apollo and is the only medieval church in Marseille still surviving.
It survived the French Revolution (although it was robbed of all its gold and silver treasures) and although it sustained significant damage during WWII, it withstood the bombings and was gradually restored.
Like most churches, its free to go inside.
