点评:A short film on the plantation's history is shown before walking to the home. The plantation is along the Altamaha River which is suited for rice cultivation. In the early 1800s, enslaved African laborers harvested rice from marshes along the Altamaha River. This plantation harvested rice until 1865 and later transitioned to a dairy farm. Our docent painted a vivid image of life for the enslaved working sunrise to sunset. They were exposed to the dangers of malaria, alligators, snakes and deep mud with sharp shells. Malaria was easily bred in the rice fields. We learned about the fiive generations of the Brailsford, Troup, and Dent families that lived here over 150 years. The last family member, Ophelia Dent, passed away in 1973 and left the property to the state of Georgia. All furnishings are original to the house and the families that owned it. This was an informative tour about history on this land. Senior admission ticket was $6.50. Nice gift shop and clean restroom.
