The very first observance of Mother's Day at the famed Wanamaker's! Mother's Day became a national holiday due to the efforts of a Philadelphia resident by the name of Anna Marie Jarvis. In 1908, Anna Jarvis organized the first Mother's Day celebration in the Wanamaker's department store. She became later very very very unhappy and disgusted with how the holiday had become commercialized and detested the idea of retail businesses like greeting card companies, florists and others who sought to profit off of the day. She along with her sister Ellsinore spent the rest of their lives campaigning against Mother’s Day. They passionately opposed its growing commercialization and eventually campaigned against the holiday. Anna's final residence was at the Marshall Square Sanatorium in West Chester, Pennsylvania. She died there in 1948 and was buried at West Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd. Happy Mother’s Day from a fellow Methodist young woman!
