An American couple were also confused about how to pay, so we spent some time helping them before going to the nearby café to get cashback. The café would only give cashback with a purchase over £5, so we ended up buying two coffees for £9.80 just to get the cash we needed.
We then paid for parking and genuinely believed we had paid for five hours (or until 7.30 pm). We returned to the car park at around 6.30 pm, thinking we had plenty of time left. A few days later, we received a £100 parking charge (£60 if paid early).
Thankfully, I found the parking ticket, but it appears the machine took only £5 payment covering four hours. The ANPR cameras recorded our stay as approximately 4½ hours. We honestly believed we had paid £8 for longer and had no intention of overstaying.
I've appealed and sent them a copy of the ticket, but judging by the number of similar reviews, I have very little confidence the appeal will be considered fairly.
The whole system feels designed to catch people out. A cash-only machine, the need to leave the site to obtain cash, and a £100 charge for what appears to have been a genuine mistake do not seem fair. I hope the council reviews its relationship with the operator and how this car park is managed.
