On August 2, 2026, I visited the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center with my 9-year-old daughter. We had never been there before, and at first, I thought it was going to be a wonderful place to spend the day together.
Before entering, I specifically asked the staff if there was anything we needed to know since it was our first visit. I was told, “Just enter and follow the signs.”
About halfway through our visit, we stopped at the Gordon Interactive Playscape: A Predator–Prey Adventure, which includes indoor and outdoor play areas. My daughter was playing, and we stayed there for approximately 15 minutes.
I was checking on her every few minutes. Then, at one point, I looked around and couldn’t find her.
I immediately went inside the Gordon Interactive Playscape and began calling her name. No answer.
I searched one section, then another, continuing to call her name. Still nothing.
At that moment, panic and desperation began to set in. I started looking for an exit sign, thinking that if I couldn’t locate my daughter, I needed to know how to quickly get out or find someone who could help me.
I couldn’t find an exit sign.
When you’re calm, five minutes is five minutes. When you’re terrified because you can’t find your child, five minutes feels like twenty. Your mind starts imagining every possible worst-case scenario.
After approximately 10 minutes of searching, I finally found my daughter.
The relief I felt at that moment was indescribable.
But the experience had changed the way I viewed the facility. I no longer felt comfortable continuing our visit, so I started making my way back toward the exit.
As I walked back, I began paying attention to the emergency signage. I counted one clearly marked exit sign, along with a welcome sign indicating the way back.
I eventually entered the gift shop, where a staff member asked if I needed something. I explained exactly what had happened and told her about my difficulty finding an exit. I asked her how many exit signs there were throughout the park.
She told me there were two exit signs.
I asked her a simple question:
“Do you believe that’s enough, given the size of the park?”
There was no response.
My concern is not about blaming the individual employee or the staff members I encountered. My concern is about emergency preparedness and the ability of visitors to quickly find their way to safety.
Imagine a more serious emergency—perhaps a dangerous animal escaping, a child becoming separated from a parent, or another situation requiring visitors to leave an area quickly. In that situation, people should not have to stop and figure out where the exits are.
Emergency exits and escape routes need to be obvious, clearly marked, and easy to locate—especially in a facility designed for families and children.
I strongly encourage the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center to revisit its emergency escape routes, exit signage, and overall wayfinding system.
This isn’t simply a matter of convenience. In my opinion, clear emergency escape routes are indispensable, vital, and essential.
I am sharing this review because I hope the center takes this experience seriously and uses it as an opportunity to improve. I would much rather see changes made now than have another parent experience the fear and helplessness I felt that day.
What started as a day I was looking forward to spending with my daughter ended with a frightening experience that I will not soon forget.
I hope the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center listens, evaluates its emergency procedures, and makes the necessary improvements to keep families safe.
