Brook Waimārama Sanctuary的点评
点评：I have lived in NZ for 40 years (born and raised in Nelson) and have never seen (only heard) kiwi in my entire life - and I've been getting out in the backcountry fairly regularly.
Last night I saw a kiwi for the very first time while on a night tour of The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary with my partner and family visiting from Canada. That was an incredibly special experience for all of us, and it happened right here in our backyard.
We are incredibly grateful to our tour guide, Emily, who is overflowing with enthusiasm for her job and incredibly knowledgeable, especially with insects! On my own, I would have walked through the sanctuary and missed most of these things, but Emily had eyes like a hawk and skilfully described everything she discovered.
I really appreciated that Emily allowed the tour to go way over- time to ensure we had plenty of opportunity to see and hear kiwi.
Another surprise was the ability to see the night sky so clearly. Due to the absence of light pollution, the view of the stars was phenomenal.
I absolutely recommend a trip to the sanctuary at any time of day, but I especially want to recommend doing a night tour. I think the fee is very reasonable and absolutely worth it - especially as you are supporting the amazing work of this not-for-profit organisation. The tour groups are kept to a small size so it's a very intimate tour. This is a chance to be mesmerised and filled with wonder by Nelson’s stunning natural environment.
We went in autumn and I think is a really good time to go because it gets dark earlier and you don't have to wait until 9pm, plus it's a great excuse to get out of the house when it’s colder.
Thank you so much to all the staff and volunteers who make the sanctuary possible and especially to Emily for bringing the sanctuary so alive to us last night.
