点评:When the City of Toronto decided to build a new city hall, they also planned for a great public gathering space. What they got was one of the most interesting and unconventional city halls and perhaps one of the best civic spaces that you should absolutely plan to visit during your Toronto stay. While the square itself is beautiful civic space it will have multiple things for you to see in one stop including Old City Hall, current City Hall and the "Toronto" sign.
When you reach Queen Street, the skyscrapers of the Financial District dissipate and you transition to a more public space that includes local governmental buildings, provincial governmental buildings, the court system, the University of Toronto and multiple museums. While some recent highrises have been sprinkled in, this is really a public oriented area and as such a gathering square seems only appropriate.
The square is 12 acres making it the largest square in Canada. It has a stage and a large reflecting pool that doubles as an ice rink during Toronto's winters. It has also been the civic celebration site for the city's championship celebrations like when the Raptors won the NBA playoffs. Perhaps one day, the Maple Leafs will win the Stanley Cup.
The day of our visit during Labor Day weekend, the stage was being used for a festival; however, our morning visit allowed us to see the square before the festival was active. I thought it was a great civic space; although, I thought it lacked green space. Again, you need to visit and see it during your stay.
