点评:A Miss-not Death Railway Bridge to experience
The Bridge over the River Kwai, located in Kanchanaburi, Thailand is famous as a historic iron bridge known as the "Death Railway" built by Allied prisoners of war (POWs) and forced laborers for the Japanese during World War II. The bridge is well known for its scenic views and a memorial site to those who had sacrificed during its construction.
It was known that the 415-kilometer long "Death Railway" was constructed in 1942–1943 connecting Thailand and Burma (now Myanmar), enabling Japanese forces to transport supplies. Over 16,000 POWs (the British, Dutch, Australian, and American) and roughly 90,000 civilian laborers died during the construction of the railway due to brutal conditions, disease, and starvation.
We found that the bridge spans the Khwae Yai (renamed in 1960) River, which was said to rename as it crosses the Mae Klong River. What we know special about is the influence by the global recognition of the 1957 fictional film ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’ starred by William Holden besides many others. The film won seven Academy awards
Today it has become the tourist attraction site where the visitors can walk across the bridge, or take photographs and videos.
People can also visit nearby war memorials, and/or take train rides along the railway to experience the ‘Death Railway’ which recapped the hardship of WW II sacrifices.
The original bridge was said to be a wooden structured bridge but the damaged parts of the original sections were restored because the bridge was bombed several times by the Allied forces.
One interesting feature about this place is ‘A River Kwai Bridge Week’. This is known to held annually in late November / or early December months, featuring a sound-and-light show that re-kindles the wartime bombing.
