点评:This church and the Camino have been on my bucket list for years. Still working so did portions of the Portuguese Camino from Porto. (Shorter). Construction began in 1077 and was completed in 1211 to house the remains of St James. Filled with gold and silver (no doubt plundered from Mexico and South America), the organ is ancient (16th century) and is still in use. There is a daily and well-attended Mass for pilgrims. (The Camino draws nearly 1M pilgrims a year). The daily night Mass 7:30pm glows with now electric candlelight. The huge (150 kilo) incense burner that hangs from the dome has been removed for repairs to the dome - to my great disappointment. And apparently is swung only on special occasions. It is not expected to be reinstalled for a year.
I am not “faithful” but sitting there under a soaring roof raised entirely by hand gives insight into the power of faith.
Admissions is free.
Take a tour of the cathedral museum (2 hours) for ~9 E to see more of the treasures and relics - consider a guided tour of the portico and roof ~ 15 E.
