西昂旧居公园的点评
点评：Despite having lived half an hour away for over forty years, and having visited the Hillier’s garden centre next door, we had never been to Syon House itself, perhaps deterred by its rather grim looking facade of Bath stone. But the interior, particularly the stunning Adam design suite of public rooms, is spectacular as are the contents: pictures, sculptures, clocks, books, furniture and a fabulous 18C reversible Adam designed carpet.
Our tour guide was excellent, both enthusiastic and knowledgeable, with a wealth of stories about the building, its history and contents, its owners and occupiers from the Percy/Northumberland family.
One minor quibble: the tour was advertised as being 90 minutes long, but ran on for an extra 10-12 minutes, which is quite a long time to be standing and listening to one voice. As a guide at another famous institution I’ve learned that however enthusiastic you are to communicate your passion for the place - and there’s never enough time to impart all you want to share - it’s important to recognise that visitors have fatigue levels and possibly other commitments .
