Our guide and driver picked us up from our hotel and brought us here as part of a day tour package. Our guide provided the entrance tickets.
The mosque sits inside the Citadel of Saladin, up on a hill above the city. The facility is gated and guarded, and no public vehicles are allowed inside, so you walk in from the gate. There are some shops inside the grounds.
The facility is huge, inside and out. Before you enter the mosque, you will be asked to remove your shoes or purchase shoe covers from the people by the door. Dress modestly for this one — cover shoulders and knees, both men & women.
The mosque itself is huge! It is called the Alabaster Mosque because of the alabaster stone covering its walls. It was built for Muhammad Ali Pasha, the founder of modern Egypt, and it is modeled on the great mosques of Istanbul, with a big central dome.
In the courtyard there is a structure where Muslims used to wash before prayer, and a clock tower that was a gift from the King of France, given in exchange for the ancient obelisk from Luxor that now stands in Paris. Our guide told us the clock has never worked — France got the better end of that deal!
Muhammad Ali's tomb is inside the mosque, to the right as you enter, behind a bronze screen. And no, this is not the boxer — this is Muhammad Ali Pasha, the ruler of Egypt.
Outside, from the Citadel walls you also get a bird's eye view over the whole city of Cairo, so bring your camera.
It was good to get a bird's eye view of how Muslims worship, too. Our guide explained the prayers and the washing ritual, and also included how arranged marriage works, living situations, and everyday life in Egypt.
If you're in Cairo, you should stop by. We spent 1 hours here because our guide gave us more than its history.
Have a great visit!
