点评:I went on a Thursday got a local dolmus bus (130 TL / £2) from a nearby resort at 9am and bought tickets at the Lower Gate entrance. There were a few food shops / gift shops at this end and free toilets once you're through the barriers. It annoyed me how there were barely any tours for people who weren't on cruises! There was no queue and I got the cheapest ticket (€40) but it came out of my bank card as £41, so I think there was a an extra card fee (and this was with a no international fees credit card). I regret not getting the Terraced House ticket or museum combo as I was staying near to Selcuk.
At around 9:30am my family were the only ones near the Theater and it was incredibly quiet and breathtaking to walk around the ruins. As we approached the Library of Celsus it was apparent many tour groups had entered from the other side and it quickly became very busy.
I was amazed at how freely we could walk around and touch most ruins. Truly one of the greatest experiences I have had related to ancient history! Walking up Curete St was so fascinating and you really get the feeling of being in a city. I had done little research into the location and was so impressed with how much there was to do / see!
In October, I thought the weather was perfect for walking around. I'd recommend bringing your own water and a hat though as there's not much shade. If you want to know more about the history of the site, you'd probably want a guide as it's more of a viewing experience by yourself. I heard bits and pieces from other groups as I was walking around and educated myself when I got home! In the cheapest ticket there's an experience museum which provides a brief overview of Ephesus but the queues were long and it's more like a mini movie where you're ushered into about 3 different rooms. The advantage of doing everything by yourself is the luxury of time. We probably spent around 4 hours overall and had lots of opportunities to take nice photos, simply by waiting for the big tour groups to move on.
