Tuk Tuk scam and how it operates

点评：We are widely travelled seniors and was staying in nearby The Manila Hotel. With maps in hand our plan was to spend the day walking the walled old city. To get there we needed to cross the very busy multi-lane road which had a construction zone. A tuk tuk driver approached us saying the entry to the old walled city was closed, crossing the road unsafe and we were going in the wrong direction. But offered to take us. It would include showing us some sites. He had a 2 sides laminated card showing sites and on the rear some written information. The agreed price was negotiated down from P350 to P250 for two of us to show us some sites. The drivers English was not good. This tuk tuk trip ended up a 3.5 hour tour. Near the end the drivers English suddenly became much clearer as he stated the fee was per person for each 30 minute block. So the charge went from P250 to get there up to P3500. Stranded in the middle of a busy road in an unknown area was part of the trick to leveraging money from us. We were shocked because we never had that amount of cash on us. He compromised with a 50% discount at P1700. In hind sight had we known the pricing and structure we could have used this tuk tuk service to make a great day of it if the driver had been more honest. As older people I think walking this large area in hot sun would have been hard.
There were many interesting sites like the Dungeons, Casa Manila and Rum Museum with tasting (fee).
If you're not able to walk long distances I suggest you consider using the tuk tuks but take a photo of both sides of the card and video record clearly what the price is and what you get.
