点评:Before a recent trip to Europe, my only experience of the Matterhorn was the ride at Disneyland. But on this latest holiday, I was determined to see the real thing, and so we took a day-trip to Zermatt (all the way down from Zurich) and was rewarded with both a spectacularly clear day (virtually the ONLY one during our week in Switzerland) and the most incredible views of the Matterhorn imaginable. It does take some time to make the climb by rail up to the heights of Zermatt perched in the Alps, but the effort is more than worth it, if you're fortunate enough to have good weather. Catching a brief glimpse of the peak from the train window as we rounded the last bend into town was only a teaser for the main event yet to come. The town itself of exceptionally charming with a surfeit of hotels, inns, shops and restaurants. I would highly recommend going shoulder-to-off season to avoid the worst of the crowds (even in late September, there were still a lot of people coming up, but nowhere near as bad as I'm sure it is during summer—although I'm guessing it's also a mad-house during ski season). You have lots of options for viewing the mountain (just a few miles to the southwest of Zermatt straddling the Swiss-Italian border) and the walk up to the main viewing areas on the south edge of town are a modest uphill walk from the center of town. If natural wonders and spectacles are your thing, then by all means make the trip to Zermatt to see this one!
