点评:The Amman Citadel lies on a hill in the eastern section of the city. Naturally, in ancient times, it would have been the ideal place for seeing invaders from long distances, and subsequently defending against them. Today, it makes getting there somewhat tiring, but oh so worth it.
When planning my trip to Jordan, the Citadel was at the top of my To-Do List. As a history buff, I couldn't deny the historic importance of such a site, in one of the world's longest continuously inhabited cities.
If you have the Jordan Pass, you'll get in for free. Otherwise it's 3 JOD (approximately 6$ Canadian). This gives you unrestricted access to virtually the entire site: the Temple of Hercules, Umayyad Palace, and everything else.
My favourite part of the site was the incredible views. You can see all around Amman; every angle, every quarter, and every hill. When the sun begins to set you'll hit golden hour, and you will see astounding views of the city.
I'd also like to give a special shout-out to Jordan's Tourism Police. This is a section of their police force that specifically works to protect tourists from being scammed or taken advantage of. I saw a few officers stationed at the Citadel. I know many of us tourists are appreciative of their presence.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, there are no restrictions on touching or climbing on most parts of the ruins. This includes the oft-photographed Temple of Hercules. People are free to sit atop the ruins, enjoying the views, and placing their hands on pieces of history.
I'm not here to say whether or not that's okay, surely the ruins may not last as long if this is permitted to continue, but in a world where ancient sites like these are stringently controlled I do have to admit it was a breath of fresh air to see people interacting with history and appreciating it's enormity.
Overall, I couldn't recommend the Citadel enough. A must-see for visitors to Jordan's Capital.
