Not so easy for tourists who are seniors

点评：We are a couple aged 70 but have travelled extensivey as independent tourists. We started at the jetty beside The Horizons restaurant at the waterfront. There was a couple of locals spruking for monkey boat ride tours. They started at B$70 for two passengers in our own boat and I negotiated down to B$30. Had heard it can be as low as B$25 but we were happy. It included life jackets. Boat ride went at high speed a long way up the river seeing birds, lizards, lots of fish jumping out of the water, mangroves and monkeys a long way back from the edge but no crocodiles. The boat driver tried lot of locations with no luck. Got returned to Kampung Ayes Cultural Centre after a quick trip around the water village. Boat trip was about 80 minutes duration. As it was Friday the Tourist Centre shuts at 11.00am and doesn't reopen till 2.30pm for mandatory prayers. Free entry. In early April 2026 a section of walkway close to the Centre was closed for repairs so the usual tourist route was not accessible. As seniors we found walking over rotten, loose timber planks with no handrail too shaky so soon turned back to the outer concrete path. The map at the Tourist Centre failed to provide enough detail as there are over 30 klms of walkways. However some timber walkways are so rotten with others collapsed. I would suggest trying to find a local guide to make it easier as there a no sign posts or walkway names. It is a maze. Getting a boat back to the other side was easy as you just flag down one of the speedboats and cost B$1 per person without negotiating. People of Brunel are welcoming, friendly, honest, speak excellent English and willing to help tourists.
