点评:One of the things to do coming to the coast at HVNP is to see the native Hawaii Petroglyphs or rock markings. No one is exactly sure what they mean or how long they have been there. However, the carvings are on one of the older lava flows along the Chain of Craters Road as there are grasses growing around the rocks. The hike is a short 1.3-mile round trip out and back. However, as it meanders through a lava flow, it is rocky and up and down so it will take longer than a normal path of that length.
Our visit to the coast of HVNP was marked by bands of intermittent sunshine and heavy rain. We were fortunate to see the sea arch and walk the road to the lava flow that overtook it in the sunshine, but as we departed to see the petroglyphs, a heavy band of showers was approaching the coast. My son and I decided to make a run for it but 3/4 of the way to the petroglyphs we began to experience the heavy rain. At that moment, we simply enjoyed the moment knowing we were going to be soaked. The band was slowing as we reached the petroglyphs and we walked the entire boardwalk to see them. In fact, the rain made the petroglyphs very easy to see and picture. We then sloshed back to the car to find the rest of our group dry and waiting for our return.
