Great Castle. Leave Time to Walk Around the Grounds

点评：Trim Castle is a wonderful place to visit. It is an enormous castle with attractive grounds and lots to see.
Others have written on the castle's history, but it is now somewhere around 900 years old. There are extensive castle walls and a large tower structure in the center.
It's free to walk around the grounds (which we recommend) and a tour of the castle tower is something like £5. The tour is well worth it. They tell you a lot both about the castle and how castles worked in everyday life.
They filmed many of the scenes in the movie Braveheart here, although they made several changes for staging reasons. The movie starred Mel Gibson and won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1995.
There are extensive park grounds around the castle that include the River Boyne, which along side it and various other ruins, such as a large monastery tower. Part of the walk is closed for renovations, but you can still get most of the way around. There is also a herd of donkeys kept about 300 yards south of the castle near the roundabout. A small bridge to the north (again, about 300 yards) purports to be the oldest in Ireland.
This is a great castle in a charming town only 45 minutes or so from Dublin. We stayed at the Drum Castle Hotel, which was very good, but it would also be part of an easy day trip.
