点评：This is the largest of the Anglo-Norman castles in all of Ireland. And it is indeed massive. Like other construction projects, the three storey Keep was built upon a previous wooden fortress. The stone building started 1176.
The tower external walls were completely a new design: 22 sided tower. yes. 22 sided. It was protected by a moat (sorry, no alligators), deep ditch and curtain walls. And it had four towers. All in all, it covered about 3 acres. Now fast forward several hundred years until 18th century. Living in a dimly lite castle was cold and damp. Large windows were a no-no. But it was imposing and threatening. Yet, it had a problem.....no internal wells or springs. Yet they tried to solve this with water collection tanks. What this castle wanted to exclaim is this "to you Irish, we are the Anglo-Saxons, and we are here to stay." They ruled since 1066 with the invasion of William the Conqueror." As an aside note---ole Monsieur William was French and for centuries French was the language of the English courts. Today, and since 2000, non-royals such as you and me---we can visit, for a slight fee.
