点评:I'll start by saying that all the staff were uniformly friendly and eager to help, so this is in no way a comment on them.
However I found this site poorly laid out and confusing for visitors. There is minimal to no signage, very little context offered, and we would have missed quite a bit of the structure if my father hadn't gone up a random staircase to see what was at the top. I assumed it was off limits to the public because there was no signage whatsoever. A large part of the building is not open right now due to restoration work. The part that is closed off features heavily in the one brochure available so that's a bit of a letdown.
In general I think the OPW could put a lot more thought into this site with more interpretation, guided tours (live or audio guides), and clearer signposting both within the ruins and throughout the walks to the walled garden and elsewhere.
Another strange feature was taking cash only for tickets which in this day and age isn't really acceptable.
It would be great if there was a clearly laid out progression from historical information about the original religious order, William Marshall & Isabel De Clare, to the eventual owners who turned it into a house, perhaps some kind of conceptual or virtual demonstration of what it would have looked like other than just old photographs, the Gardens and perhaps the current work being done on site. The way it is now is more random snippets unconnected to the locations where the text has been pasted up. There are also beautiful displays of stone at the very top of this mysterious staircase with absolutely zero context - not even a small plaque to say what they are let alone why it's important.
We enjoyed our walk around the grounds and seeing the garden was pleasant, but especially at a time of the year where nothing is growing yet in the kitchen garden and the ornamental garden is very limited, it would be nice to have some more to engage with.
