点评:The Museum of Normady in Caen is, on account of the different interesting items exhibited there an appropriate place to learn about history of the region and, particularly, about divers features of its economy and peoples daily life from prehistory to the twentieth century. It was founded in 1945 and finds itself in the Caen Castle built in the eleventh century by William the Conqueror.
The Museum houses, in the Governor's Lodge of the Castle, a permanent collection of different types of items ranging from, as already stated, the prehistory, through the Roman period and the time of the different migrations to our epoch. The exhibits on Norman agriculture, particularly on the apple cider, are very interesting. Likewise, the items regarding arts and crafts, including pottery, woodworking and metal, clothes and textiles are worth seeing. In this respect, among such items, a weaving loom and a stunning wedding dress are really impressive. There are likewise a few nice and pretty paintings.
As far as the archaeological side is concerned, the statue of the mother-goddess is outstanding. It represents a woman sitting in an armchair with two children, one on each side. She wears a diadem and has two brooches and a tradition Gallic torque around her neck. It's really a fantastic sculpture.
During the visit to that Museum one may learn some special details on several exciting questions. For example, about the building itself, the use of the so called Queen Mathilde Tower. Some details on funerary matters, such as about the location of the cemeteries in the Roman times both in towns and in the countryside are also revealed. It's fascinating to know, for instance, in this field, that the grave sites were sometimes marked with a stela. The Merovingian coinage is also a gripping subject on which some details may be apprehended in the Museum. Another important point on which one may get a clear information concerns the presence of Vikings in Normandy.
The visit to that Museum is therefore worth the while. The personnel working in it are not particularly kind but if one is aware of that, some unpleasant surprises can be shunned.
