点评:Reading the other reviews now, it is obvious that I missed a lot of the context for this shrine. However, it was still a very enjoyable visit. The walk from the train station to the shrine is fun (because of all the shops, most selling things you don't need, but still fun). The shrine itself has very beautiful gardens. They cover quite a large area, and for me this was the highlight. Since it was the time of the cherry blossoms, the gardens were especially beautiful.
The shrine buildings are less impressive than some in Japan, but still very nice. So, overall, it was a great place to visit. When you consider that the excellent Kyushu national museum is just next door, this area makes a great half-day or even full-day excursion. A combined admission ticket for the shrine and the national museum is 1000 yen.
Access from Hakata station in Fukuoka was easy, with only one transfer, and frequent trains.
