Instead of just rocks, vast sections of the water are filled with massive submerged boulders, making it extremely difficult to cross. The gaps between them range from two to four feet, creating treacherous footing.
I managed to push through, glimpsing even more boulders beneath the deeper water. Fortunately, the ocean was relatively calm, but another challenge was getting back to shore. By the time I did, my legs were covered in half a dozen bleeding scrapes. My wife had alcohol wipes, which I used to clean the wounds.
I told the lifeguards that, having visited hundreds of beaches, this was the most dangerous I had ever encountered. They agreed, explaining that past hurricanes had displaced the boulders, rendering the shoreline hazardous for at least a mile in both directions. In my opinion, the boulders should either be removed or the beach permanently closed to swimmers.
