The tour of this Georgian house brings history to life - do book this!
Wordsworth House and Garden的点评
点评:In Cockermouth I intended to visit the House of Wordsworth. The village itself is very quaint but all “residential parking” with discs. I managed to find a public carpark at the top of the hill and had to walk down into the town to the Georgian House where Wordsworth had lived his early years.
As I entered the National Trust shop/ ticket office a lady was being told that entry to the house was by booked tour only, two tours per day and fully booked for that day. She had come from London to visit this house. If it had said it should be booked on the website I would have done so but it didn’t and I joined in with this lady’s protestations. Fortunately, the girl on the desk relented and squeezed us into the last tour. We only had five minutes to wait for the tour. I had a really good visit in the end but I have included this experience in my narrative to warn visitors to check thoroughly before travelling any distance. Opening times at this National Trust site is limited and on top of that the house is not open to visitors unless booked on a tour.
The volunteer guide we had was excellent and she painted quite a picture of times gone by, where today’s sayings come from, and the life the Wordsworth family had until their parents both died within four years of one another, leaving the children orphaned. At this point, they were thrown out of the family home, the youngest went to family and the older boys were fostered, which included William.
Very pretty garden which is also a kitchen garden.
