Medieval Church in Charming Historic Village
The Parish and Priory Church of St. George, Dunster的点评
点评:Dunster’s St George Church and the impressive Dunster Castle were both built by William de Moyon, the first feudal baron of Dunster in the 11th century. Together they represent the earliest history of this very charming, historic village.
William’s money largely (or probably entirely), funded the building of the church. No doubt, he hoped to safeguard his soul and secure eternal salvation through such good deeds.
Although the church dates back some 1000 years, it has been significantly altered and added to over the centuries. What you see here doesn’t bear much resemblance to the original building.
Most of what you see, including the tower was built in the 15th century. It underwent a major restoration in the 19th century.
Unfortunately, the church was closed when we were there so we didn’t see inside which was a shame as I believe it has some impressive features, including a very large rood screen that divided the church in half. It was an odd arrangement where the regular folk came to mass and sat in the west end, and the monks sat separately, before a high altar at the opposite end.
