点评:To me, Huanchao is a typical beach area similar to those in the United States that are full of locals and tourists enjoying the area. However, the small strip of beach here was littered with rocks. and suffering from erosion but it did not stop the locals from enjoying water sports. Along the main street are seafront restaurants and many stalls with locals selling typical beach items, souvenirs, and street food. Fishermen can be seen fishing off the long wooden pier, originally built as the main harbor for Trujillo before its use for exporting sugar. Ceviche is popular as well surfing.
What in the world is a caballito? During our port call stop in Peru at Huanchao, a small fishing village and seaside town not far from Trujilio, and saw them lined up along the beachfront. What makes this town special are the traditional fishing boats known as caballito de totor, a cross between a canoe and a surfboard. The paddle is a slice of bamboo. They are crafted from reeds that grow in marshy areas. They are stacked along the beachfront to dry. These boats last only a few months because they become waterlogged and must be replaced. Some enterprising fishermen allow visitors to rent their boat for a small fee. The hollowed-out portion in the center is used to carry fishing nets and other necessities.
