点评:Best to plan ahead if you wish to see the site where the sycamore tree once stood prior to it’s felling by vandals who were eventually caught and briefly imprisoned.
Unfortunately our proposed visit wasn’t planned ahead and as I drove along the B6318 looking for the site I was trying to think where would be the best place to park. I spotted “the gap” from the road however there was no place to stop until we reached Housesteads Visitor Centre car park and by then I realised it would be too far a walk for our family group.
With hindsight I should have pulled off the road at Steel Rigg Car Park where Northumberland National Park charges apply - £5 for 3 hours. From the car park it is a walk of just under a mile following the Peninne Way alongside Hadrian’s Wall and takes around 20 minutes to walk or alternatively follow the less contoured route along Hadrian’s Wall Path (signposted public footpath at Peel Cottage). You do need to walk back too so probably allow at least 1 hour.
