点评:You cannot miss the Line of Lode Miners Memorial. It sits atop the remains of the “broken” hill after which the town was named and stands as a focal point and reminder of the cost of the industry that created both the town and the largest mining company in the world, BHP (Broken Hill Proprietary).
More than 800 lives were lost, digging out the massive silver, lead and zinc deposits for which the area is famous. The rust-red memorial was opened in 2001 and has the name of each miner who died etched into freestanding glass panels within the monument. The youngest casualty was, heart-breakingly, only 12 as it was common for children to go to work in the mines after they left Primary School. It is, indeed, a solemn walk through those high steel walls.
For a before or after visit, there is also a café/restaurant on the hill that serves breakfast and lunch and gives you an amazing view over a town that is past its glory days but remains a pivotal piece of Australia’s history.
