We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Biesbosch Museum. It is modern, informative and beautifully presented, offering a perfect introduction to the history and unique nature of the Biesbosch.
One of the highlights was the exhibition about the WWII Line Crossers. Their courageous missions through the Biesbosch were incredibly moving. The story of General Sir John Hackett’s escape, together with the original television interview from 1967, made this chapter of Dutch history especially memorable.
We also had no idea that the Biesbosch was created after the devastating St. Elizabeth’s Flood of 1421. Since then, it has evolved into one of the Netherlands’ most important freshwater wetlands and a safe haven for an incredible variety of wildlife. From white-tailed and osprey eagles to beavers, otters, deer and foxes, as well as fish such as eel, sturgeon and catfish, the biodiversity is simply remarkable.
If you’re planning to explore the Biesbosch, this museum is the perfect place to start. Highly recommended!
