点评:Galway is basically a small town built entirely around alcohol and cigarettes and pretending that’s culture. Multiple locals straight up told us, “You go to NYC for food and exploring. You come to Galway for perfected craic, alcohol, and a smoke.” And they were dead serious.
Everything revolves around drinking. That’s the identity.
Businesses don’t even keep consistent hours. Cafés close randomly before posted times. Restaurants shut down hours early. Shops open late. Phones go unanswered. Staff look annoyed that customers exist — yet somehow still expect tips and sympathy posts about “support local.”
And if you point any of it out? You’ll get some proud speech about how drinking has been perfected for generations. As if that’s something to brag about.
Meanwhile the country loses billions to alcohol-related damage every year, but here it’s treated like a personality trait.
If you want nightlife, it’s pubs.
If you want evening activity, it’s pubs.
If you want “culture,” it’s pub culture.
I thought there’d be more depth. Instead it feels like the main export is young people leaving and the main pastime is getting hammered.
Never seen a place so defensive about dysfunction.
