点评:Saturday 26th September we visited Issos beach which is on the southwestern coast of Corfu. It is also considered to be one of the Island's finest, so we thought worth a visit.
For us to get there, it was a journey of 43 kilometre (almost 27 milies) which was a ninety minute drive. The weather was not great, rain was threatening and eventually did briefly, it turned out to be a bonus as it was nearly deserted here.
The beach is roughly about a mile and a half of golden sand washed by the Ionian with the sandstone rocks at the rear of the beach creating the dunes. With the Lagoon nearby and the mountainous terrain, in background, something spectacular created by nature.
We walked along the beach, in certain areas there were wooden slatted walkways laid on the sand.
Sunbeds and umbrellas were available to hire, saw a sign with €15 on it, we thought that was the price for two beds and an umbrella.
There is massive areas of "free beach" to spread out towels and beach mats, weather permitting, and relax and have a picnic. Be aware that there is no natural shade along the beach.
There was lots of driftwood along the beach which added to the spectacle and feel of wilderness of the beach.
At the time of our visit there was there was a cantina van selling food, snacks and drinks, as we arrived it was getting ready to close. Further down the beach we passed the Corfu Surf Club, this was closed assuming due to the adverse weather conditions.
After a spell of walking on the dark golden sand we then ventured into the dunes which had so many juniper trees covered in bright purple berries. As we walked through the dunes with their impressive sandstone rock formations, we could see Korission Lagoon not too far away.
When we visit a beach, we like to apply a simple rule for ourselves, leave the beach taking three pieces of rubbish away, each.
Sadly here there was an over abundance to chose from, the beach was filthy with rubbish washed up and lots of bits of plastic and bottle lids. The beach did not appear to be maintained and the only bins on the beach were by the cantina.
At the entrance to the beach car park, there were a number of Municipal large bins, the rubbish was overflowing on to the ground and surrounding area, not a welcoming sight. A major clean up was long overdue.
