点评:Forgotten monument in the suburbs of Chania. Dedicated to the casualties among german paratroopers during the Battle of Crete in summer 1941. The monument has been intentionally abandoned both by local and german authorities and left as prey of weather (the original eagle on top has been blown away by storm decades ago and never restored) and vandals (the stone inscription broken in pieces and partially cancelled by throwing buckets of paint over it). The steps leading to the monument are surrounded by schacks and guard dogs that will bark againts you as you climb). The reason for all this can be found probably in the crimes committed by germans during occupation especially towards civilians. Anyhow if you visit the german cemetery in Maleme you will see that many of the soldiers were in their 20s and will learn some dramatic stories (3 brothers aged 20 to 23, killed in 1 day). I am not sure all of them acted as criminals. As a consequence I am not sure if it's a good and right attitude to leave rott down a monument in some way related to their sacrifice.
